Cosmetology Instructor CourseNATURE OF OCCUPATIONS:
Cosmetology Instructors are able to teach Cosmetology in a licensed school of Cosmetology, trade school, or vocational school.
The 500 clock hour Cosmetology Instructor Course provides a thorough review of all subject matter required in the Cosmetology curriculum, the various phases in teaching techniques and procedures, including the psychology of teaching. Student teachers do their practice teaching under direct supervision of the faculty.
The objective of the Cosmetology Instructor course is to prepare the Cosmetologist for a successful and rewarding career as a licensed Cosmetology Instructor. As a result of the 500 clock hours of theory and practical teaching, the student Instructor should gain the knowledge, skills and ability to competently:
1. Prepare, organize, and present appropriated teaching materials to all learners
2. Protect the health and safety of students and patrons
3. Manage classrooms with authority and ability to ensure learner success
4. To establish methods of evaluation and correct record keeping
5. Pass the state licensing exam.
Student Instructors are given access to reference textbooks, current magazines pertaining to programs, and audio/visual aids in the schools media area. The also have access to the internet where they can obtain information needed in order to fulfill the course requirements. Student Instructors also have access to webinars and other teaching aids, including textbooks, lesson plans and mannequins with a tripod stand for demonstration purposes.
TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS:
Academic and learning methods used during the program are the standard methods of outlining the text, feedback from Instructors, demonstrations, DVD presentations, and hands on experience. Table conversations with Instructors, problem solving tasks, projects, competitions and guest speakers are also utilized.
The qualitative elements used to determine academic progress is a reasonable system of grades as determined by assigned academic learning. Students are assigned academic learning and a minimum number of practical experiences. Academic learning is evaluated after each unit of study. Practical assignments are evaluated as completed and counted toward course completion only when rated as satisfactory or better. If the performance does not meet satisfactory requirements, it is not counted and the performance must be repeated. The student instructors are given a practical exam at 250 clock hours and a written final exam. Practical skills are evaluated according to student's text procedures and set forth in practical skills evaluation criteria adopted by the school. Students must maintain an average of 80% in theory and practical.
Students must meet with their Instructor to arrange to make up failed or missed tests and incomplete assignments.

Admission to the Cosmetology Instructor Program requires a current Michigan Cosmetology license.
The schedule for the Cosmetology Instructor Program is Mon-Thurs 9:00am-5:00pm and Friday 9:00am-3:00pm (33 hours per week)
